Thursday Throwdown

-This week has been a roller coaster of emotion.  My last official day in my office at First Dallas was yesterday.  This Sunday will be my last.  As I’ve said before, I’m excited about the future but it’s tough to walk away.

-The Falcons hired a coach.  Hopefully he can pull us out of the gutter.  Don’t know if it will happen next year but I’m believing there is potential.

-College Students, The Upper Room is tonight.  Get Info here.

-Do you live in Acworth?  If you do and you have been looking for a church that you can connect with, check out Freedom Church this Sunday.  They officially launch and I’m thinking big things are in store for these guys.  You can also check out the Pastor’s Blog here.

-I read a blog yesterday about Mr Potato Head Ministry.  It reminded me of something I did when I was starting out.  I’m still trying to find my place but I have realized that I have to be me, not someone else.

Starbucks

As I am sitting down to write today’s entry…wait, that sounds strange and makes me sound smart…..I wanted to write about an article I read recently and found some truth in….The article is entitled, 1o things you can learn from starbucks…by the way, i’m currently drinking a venti cinnamon dolce (in case you cared)…you can check out the entire article here but I just wanted to highlight one point from it….one point of the article says to perfect your core products….for the church, that means we should be striving for excellence….we shouldn’t settle for mediocrity because we just want to be lazy and “have” church just to do it….it means, we should be striving for the best possible worship experience ever…it means we should strive for excellence with everything in the church…and no, i’m not talking about clothing folks–sorry….i’m talking about giving god 100% in how we prepare ourselves to worship him…as a student pastor and one who prepares an environment for students to come…i’ve got to strive for excellence in giving people that experience that has them yearning for more……ultimately they are yearning for HIM and they might not even realize it…some might say that I want to have a MTV style youth ministry and I respond simply with, “thanks for your input.”  The kind of youth ministry that I am trying to let God build through me is one that reaches students.  However we have to do that, without watering down the gospel….we need to strive for excellence and perfect what we “do.”  We have to offer an awesome experience that has people thirsting for more….some might say i’m are trying to bring the world into the church….and with a perplexed look on my face I say, “isn’t that what I’m supposed to do?”

Mixed Emotions

I don’t know if you should write about moving from one church to the next or talk about it publically but I’m going to anyway.  Tomorrow is my last official day in the office at First Dallas.  I will be cleaning out my office, cleaning up my computer and walking out for the final time.  While I’m excited to begin a new adventure in ministry, I’m a little sad about the people you leave behind.  I mean you build relationships with people for so long and then all of the sudden, you don’t see them very much.  I just came back this past weekend from a ski trip with the students at First Dallas.  That was good for me to be outside of our element just having some fun with these guys.  It was good to have my last hurrah (sp?) if you will….This is the first time I’ve ever had to do this, leave one church and follow God’s call to another and it quite possibly won’t be the last.  I’m betting, it won’t get any easier.

we made it out alive

we are on the way home today from a weekend on the slopes with my students from first dallas…it was pretty fun except for the 5 degree weather and the snow machine blowing junk in your face…i actually had ice on my eyelashes…oh yeah, and the bus broke down twice on our way up…not fun! glad to be home and ready to get back into the swing of things…i understand everyone north of atlanta freaked out over some snow and ice this weekend….well while yall were stuck inside we were out driving on tha mess!

Friday’s Here

Alright, as promised-I’m out for the weekend.  Leaving today with a group of teenagers to go skiing for the weekend.  I must be an idiot!  No, it should be cool!  I’ll be back in the blogging world on Tuesday!

Thursday Throwdown

-I’m off to the slopes this weekend.  Will be gone Friday-Monday!

-Chan Gailey was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs as their OC.  Maybe they didn’t watch the last 6 years of GT Football.  Hopefully he will do better there.

-That’s about all.  I’m going 1,000,000 miles an hour for the next few days….lots of transition

It’s flown by!

Can I just say that I’m feeling a little weird right now?!?  I just had to get some info on registering my oldest son for kindergarten next year.  I can’t believe that he is going to be 5 in a couple of months!!!!  It just seems like the other day we brought him home from the hospital (i know everyone says that but it’s true!)  It’s crazy too that my youngest will be 4 this year!!!!  Man, time is flying by!

Big Things

I pumped about some ideas God is throwing around in my mind about increasing the church’s influence in the community.  I’m praying for some big things right now from God and will probably post about those in the next couple of weeks.  They seem kinda far fetched but it is nothing that he can’t do.  It’s funny how some folks will tell me (when I unveil these requests) that it will never happen and that the request is to great.  Let me ask this, How Great is our God?  He is indescribable, incomprehensible, everlasting, omniscient, omnipetent…you get the picture!

Keep in Mind

If you are in the Acworth area and looking for some where to attend a worship experience, check out Freedom Church next Sunday.  They launch on January 27.  Check out the Pastor’s Blog if you want also.

If you are in the Cartersville area, check out Oak Leaf Church.  I have actually been to a worship experience there and it was amazing.  They are committed to servicing their community and they don’t just talk about, THEY DO IT!  Check out their Pastor’s Blog if you want to.

If you are in the Kennesaw area, check out Northstar Church.  They are a great group of folks who’s desire is to “take-out” what they do on Sunday’s into the community the rest of the week.  This is a church that is very special to my wife and I so please do visit them if you are in Kennesaw and haven’t found “home” yet!  You can also check out their Pastor’s Blog.

Busy Time

It’s going to be a busy time for me the next few days….I’ll be on a ski trip this weekend with some students and then next week is my final week at FBC Dallas.  So the transition from one job to the next adds to the craziness.  It’s funny, you never really think much about stuff until you try to make sure that everything is in order when you leave.  That was a challenge that was issued to me by one of my mentors, be sure and leave everything in order.  It’s actually a tough job, but the right thing to do.  God is stirring some big ideas for my new ministry opportunity and I’ll be unveiling those when the time is right.
